You would save yourself the trouble of searching for information, because everything would be conveniently served up to you on a plate, courtesy of the experts. Instead of spending several hours researching issues for yourself, you could sit comfortably on your sofa at 8:30 p.m., watch the evening news, and then tune in to A-studio, Finland’s current affairs discussion programme. After that, you would know how you are supposed to think about things, which agendas to support, and who the bad guys and the good guys are. With this system, you would save a great deal of time, your worldview would remain comfortably agreeable, and you could rest assured that our politicians and media are doing everything for your own good. You would also feel that you belong to a group that does not fall for so-called misinformation, because you trust the experts who tell you how you should think about things. And if a memory happens to cross your mind — that asbestos was once considered safe, for example, or that lobotomy was awarded a Nobel Prize — you should immediately reassure yourself that, well, even experts make mistakes sometimes. There is, after all, something comforting about huddling together in the warmth of the herd rather than setting off on your own path into a headwind. And the atmosphere around the coffee table at work is much more pleasant when everyone trusts the experts on A-studio and nobody starts unnecessary arguments about things. So don’t think for yourself. Just trust the experts in the mainstream media, and so many things in life will become much easier. TampereenSanomat.fi – On the People’s Side
