:) English version
The False Ideal of Success: What Nietzsche Warned Us About Modern Society
Are You a Professional Actor Without Even Knowing It?This week, things have taken a somewhat philosophical turn at TampereenSanomat.fi, so let’s stay on that track a little longer. In the video accompanying this article, we take a look behind the scenes of success and ask a simple but important question: are you building your success on a foundation defined for you by someone else? To be clear, this article is not intended to downplay the importance of hard work or the ways money can be used to do good things for yourself and others. The cold, hard truth, however, is that problems affecting our mental well-being can gradually begin to pile up when we measure our worth in terms of material possessions, wealth and professional titles. There are people in this world who have millions in the bank and hold highly respected positions, yet cannot seem to get through life without, for example, cocaine. From the outside, everything looks fantastic. And yet, life somehow feels incomplete without a regular dose of 0.1–0.2 grams of cocaine. Meanwhile, someone we might call an ordinary person, living in a modest apartment in an ordinary apartment block, may be perfectly content with their life and not even need a beer in the sauna to lift their spirits. Of course, we should remember that the recreational cocaine user in question may also be genuinely happy with their life, even if they are playing with fire and relying on cocaine to give their existence an extra boost. Perhaps the biggest question is this: why does life fail to feel complete without a little chemical assistance? And when we shift our attention from cocaine use among millionaires back to the world of people with more ordinary incomes, social media offers many of us a different kind of “cocaine.” Our lives must be presented in the best possible light on social media, even to complete strangers. Somehow, this helps us feel that we belong among the happy and successful, that we measure up to the standards that the media and Hollywood so often feed us. But what if we simply stopped worrying about how things are supposed to look from the outside? What if we stopped caring whether our neighbours, or some complete stranger, approve of the alloy wheels on our car? Or the logo on our clothes? For many people who love theatre, summer theatre productions are one of the highlights of the season. Yet, on a subconscious level, many people perform in a summer theatre production of their own every single day. This happens when we live for other people's approval and keeping up appearances becomes more important than discovering who we really are. And lest this article sound too critical, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wealth or material possessions. Money itself is not evil, but the pursuit of it has blinded many people. Nor does misery or poverty make anyone inherently more noble. A poor person can be almost as superficial as someone who owns a golden toilet. Ultimately, it all comes down to our attitude towards things. Public visibility and influence, for example, can be used for good, for harm, or for something in between. So, if you take a moment to pause and ask yourself, “Am I a professional actor without even knowing it?”, and the honest answer surprises you a little, remember that it is never too late to change direction. You can start the next time you walk out through your front door. TampereenSanomat.fi — Standing with the People Note: The author is well aware of corruption and questionable connections in a wide range of fields. However, the world of drugs is not particularly familiar territory. The approximate single-use cocaine dose mentioned in this article was provided by AI and is intended for illustrative purposes only.
A great ad, even if it was made by the Volkswagen Group, a corporate giant.
